Apple is preparing to release its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, but the company continues to resist combining the Mac and iPad into a single hybrid device.

Apple's Touchscreen MacBook Pro Won't Become a Mac-iPad Hybrid

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple executives believe a unified product could hurt sales across both categories. The Mac and iPad together brought in $61.7 billion last year, and folding them into one product would risk cutting into both businesses. Instead, Apple continues to position them as complementary, leaning on features like Sidecar and Continuity to tie the two together.

The upcoming touchscreen MacBook Pro, expected in late 2026, isn't meant to turn the Mac into an iPad. Apple will keep the keyboard, trackpad, and familiar design intact, even as the model shifts to OLED displays and adds touch support. macOS will accommodate the new capability, helped by the larger interface elements introduced with the Liquid Glass redesign. Touch will remain optional rather than central to the experience.

Apple is also working on a large foldable iPad, though the project has encountered practical challenges related to typing and usability. As a result, its potential release has shifted toward the latter part of the decade. Even if it launches, the device is expected to remain distinctly an iPad running iPadOS, despite a display size that could rival traditional laptops.

Apple continues to differentiate the two platforms at the software level. While modern iPads use Mac-class processors, the company has opted for tablet-specific experiences, including the windowing system in iPadOS 26 and the recently introduced Apple Creator Studio, rather than bringing macOS directly to the tablet.

Gurman also provided an update on the iPad Pro cycle. Following the M5 iPad Pro launch in October, the next iteration is not expected until spring 2027. That model is expected to feature a new chip and may adopt vapor chamber cooling to reduce thermal throttling. Meanwhile, the MacBook Air is not expected to see a major redesign until 2028, when it transitions to OLED.
